MEET THE PANELISTS
Gerardo Castro
Afro-Puerto Rican artist whose work illustrates the multiplicity of the Afro-Caribbean experience by addressing issues of colonization, Queer history, ritual performance cultures, and gender. He creates constellations of elaborate, glittery, unmistakably black, and emphatically brown figures in environments that are steeped in magic and the spiritual.
Yasmín Hernández
Artist that roots her art and writing in ancestral and new liberatory practices. Brooklyn-born and raised, has exhibited and presented her work in the US and Puerto Rico, and holds a BFA from Cornell University. She has worked as an educator with Taller Puertorriqueño in Philadelphia, El Museo del Barrio, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and K-12th grade students in Aguadilla, PR.
Imna Arroyo
Renowned Afro-Puerto Rican graphic artist noted for her explorations and transmigrations that extend from graphic language to sculpture in paper and paper-mâché, as well as installation. She is currently presenting Aliento Divino (Divine Breath) in the exhibition space of La Casa del Libro in Old San Juan (Puerto Rico).
Juan Pablo Vizcaíno
Afro-Puerto Rican artist born in Santurce Puerto Rico and raised in Loiza, PR. He had an interest in the arts and traditions of the island from a young age. Raised on the banks of Rio Grande de Loiza he was immersed in nature and the rich traditions of Loiza. He continues to practice his art in the foot steps of master craftsmen, Castor Ayala, Raúl Ayala, Samuel Lind, Juan Luis Sánchez and Carlos Ayala Calcaño.
Rashida Bumbray
American curator, choreographer, author, visual and performing arts critic. Her choreographic work Run Mary Run was included in list of the Best Concerts of 2012 (NYT). In 2014, she was nominated for the distinguished Bessie Award for “Outstanding Emerging Choreographer," and was recipient of the Harlem Stage Fund for New Work. She is currently the Senior Program Manager of the Arts Exchange at The Open Society Foundations.
